Shawnna (@shawnnamusic) “Gold Digger” Was Meant For Shwanna

7 years have passed since Kanye West released his sophmore album “Late Registration” (8/30/05), the first album after the memorable Roc-A-Fella break up. Teaming up with producer Jon Brion to take his signature sample sound to new heights. Complex recemtly complied a list of moments titled “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Late Registration“. The compilation revealed that Kanyes biggest hit to date “Gold Digger”, which  reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 10 weeks was meant for Shawnna of Ludacris’ DTP clique.

“Gold Digger” wasn’t meant to be a Kanye West song. It was originally created for Shawnna’s 2004 debut album Worth Tha Weight. For whatever reason, she passed on the beat and Kanye rewrote the hook (which originally went “I ain’t saying I’m a gold digger/But I ain’t messing with no broke nigga”) from a female perspective to a male one. — Patrick “Plain Pat” Reynolds
